Known as the “Birthplace of Speed”, Daytona and its beaches were the site of the setting of the land speed record in 1937 and the beginnings of stock car racing. The Daytona Speedway is the site of several major racing events each year. Titusville, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, and the surrounding areas make up the “Space Coast". The Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral offer the opportunity to see space shuttles and Apollo, Mercury, and Gemini rockets, as well as the Astronaut Hall of Fame. The beaches and towns in the southern part of this region make up the “Treasure Coast” because of the many Spanish galleons that sunk off this coast. The area is also known for its sea turtles, alligators, birds, fish, and other wildlife.
